Are you concerned about the health and well-being of senior citizens?
What is the role of the NCAAA Advisory Council?
Perhaps you’re a senior concerned about your own well-being and that of your friends. Maybe you’re recently retired and are wondering how you can “give back” to your community? Or maybe you’re not a senior but are truly interested in helping older citizens live a healthy and meaningful life.
If any of these statements ring true for you, serving on the Advisory Council of the North Central Area Agency on Aging can be a positive way for you to address your interests.
What is the North Central Area Agency on Aging (NCAAA)?
The North Central Area Agency on Aging (NCAAA) is a regional non-profit organization based in Hartford, CT that provides planning, management of funding and advocacy services to older persons and their caregivers in the 38-town North Central Connecticut region. As a designated Area Agency on Aging, according to the Older Americans Act of 1965, NCAAA is a funding source for federal and state dollars for the elderly in North Central Connecticut.
What is the role of the Advisory Council?
The Advisory Council (AC), a voluntary board composed of 20 to 30 residents from the 38 communities served by the NCAAA, exists to provide advice and counsel to the Board of Directors on matters related to the development and implementation of the Area Plan. This plan, produced every four years, identifies the particular needs and priorities of senior citizens and their caregivers in the region and acts as a guide for the development and funding of services. In other words, the AC is the primary source of citizen input to the Board about the needs and concerns of seniors.
Among the key responsibilities of the AC are to:
- Review and comment on the needs and objectives of the Area Plan prior to Board approval.
- Review all proposals submitted by local agencies requesting Older Americans Act funds.
- Conduct site visits to the various agencies in our region that receive NCAAA funding.
- Increase awareness among seniors and the general public about the availability of services to seniors and the activities of the NCAAA to improve the quality of life of this population.
Who can be members of the Advisory Council?
We are looking for individuals who know, from personal or professional experience, the needs and concerns of seniors and their caregivers. Our Bylaws prescribe that over half the Council be 60 years of age or older and that low-income and minority persons be represented on the Council at least in proportion to their number in the region.
Members of the Council are elected by current AC members for a three-year term, and may not serve more than two consecutive terms. The AC meets a minimum of four times a year, either in-person or electronically, and members MUST attend at least three general membership meetings annually. All new members of the AC will receive an orientation and training in the operation of the NCAAA and Advisory Council activities.
